Tales from not-the Top Flight

The regular season may be over, but really that’s all just a warm up for the really exciting stuff: the play-offs! The play-offs are always very exciting, and the Premier League could really do with some of the end of season tension that they provide. All three finals are set so lets see how the teams all got there.

Everyone’s favourite Berkshire based club Reading were the first through to the Championship final after they beat Fulham 2-1 on aggregate. Then perhaps more embarrassingly they released a cartoon depicting their road to Wembley. It was quite rightly lambasted and goes a long way in showing why people really don’t like Reading. I mean its almost Blackburn chicken advert bad.

The other Championship play off semi final was an absolute corker and Huddersfield beat Sheffield Wednesday on penalties. The game finished 1-1 and away goals don’t count in the play offs so we went down to a tense penalty shoot out. Jordan Rhodes, arguably Wednesday’s best striker, refused to take a penalty and the owls lost the shoot out. I’m sure the higher ups at Wednesday will be doing all they can to try and find a loophole to send Rhodes back to Middlesbrough.

If you thought the Championship play off finals were exciting then fasten your seat belts because the League Two play offs were bloody mental. Both games finished on aggregate scores of 6-5 and both ties were won in the 95th minute! Blackpool fans finally have something to look forward to as they defeated Luton Town and broke the heart of a certain Tales writer as they went through thanks to a very late own goal from Luton. Exeter meanwhile managed to score a goal of their own in injury time as they defeated Carlisle.

The League One play off final is tomorrow as Bradford City take on last year’s play off runners up Millwall. Play off finals are always memorable so make sure you tune in to that. I’ll be back with one more column this season rounding up the play off finals so I will see you then.
