The Emirates FA Cup

The fairy-tale FA Cup run of Sutton United is in danger of being tarnished by one of the nations beloved dishes. Sutton United, currently 17th in the Conference Premier, last night experienced the biggest night in the club’s history as they played Premier League big boys, Arsenal. But at the final whistle it wasn’t so much the team’s performance or even the pitch invasion at full time that was the major talking point but the hilarious discovery of seeing substitute goalkeeper, Wayne Shaw, tucking into what can only be presumed as a meat and potato pie whilst on the bench!

The fun-factor of this whole situation has quickly turned sour and subsequently led to the apparent resignation of Shaw as the pie-gate incident is now being investigated by the Gambling commission as it is believed that a betting company had offered odds (8/1) on the emergency goalkeeper to tuck into a pie during the game. Although Shaw insists that he didn’t bet on it himself, it is believed that he may have told a few friends to slap a few bob on it, winning them a small fortune and probably earning himself a free pint and pie or 2 at the next home game.

Some say that it is ridiculous from the commission to investigate the incident and others believe that Wayne Shaw has let the club down and ruined their amazing FA cup story which will now, only be known as ‘the one where sub goalkeeper ate a pie whilst on the bench.’ Shaw had been subject to a lot of media attention in the build-up towards Sutton’s amazing tie with The Gunners including a meet up with Ian Wright and Paul Merson but was this stunt a bite too far from the big man?

There was always going to be a fine line between the great banter and embarrassing the club when it came to the attention that Shaw was receiving and maybe, just maybe, Shaw has gone slightly too far with it.
