player about to take a penalty in football

It takes a lot of nerve to keep your cool in front of thousands of people from the penalty spot, even millions of people watching around the world on television.

Some players in the Premier League era have been ice-cool from the spot, scoring in spite of the massive pressure on them. However, which players have scored the most penalty kicks since the league’s rebrand in 1992?

Alan Shearer (56 penalty kicks scored)

The former England captain holds the record for the most penalty kicks scored in history, having scored an incredible 56 spot kicks during his career for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. Shearer missed just five penalty kicks in the Premier League.

His penalty kick efforts helped Shearer score 260 goals to become the record-ever goalscorer in the current era of the English game. Among those goals were 11 top-flight hat-tricks.

Frank Lampard (43 penalty kicks scored)

Like his colleagues on our list, the former Chelsea and England midfielder was deadly from the penalty spot. Of his 177 Premier League goals for West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City, 43 of them came from the penalty spot.

Although the midfielder was highly reliable from the penalty spot, he missed seven spot-kicks during his Premier League career.

Despite playing in midfield, only five players have scored more Premier League goals than Lampard. He wasn’t just a goal scorer, though, as the former England star also produced 102 assists during his career.

Harry Kane (33 penalty kicks scored)

It may not be a surprise that England’s record goalscorer is near the top of the pile when it comes to penalty kicks scored in the Premier League.

During his Premier League career with Tottenham, the forward scored 213 goals in 320 appearances, with 33 of his top-flight goals coming from the spot. His record of 47 Premier League assists wasn’t bad for a forward player, either.

Since joining Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, Kane has also scored 13 out of 13 penalty kicks for the German giants.

Steven Gerrard (31 penalty kicks scored)

The former England captain and Liverpool legend was never one to shirk responsibility while playing for his beloved Reds.

During his illustrious career, Gerrard scored 121 goals in 504 Premier League appearances for the men from Merseyside, 31 of which were scored from penalty kicks. He also missed seven spot kicks in the English top flight.

In addition to scoring goals, Gerrard was also a provider of goals in a red shirt, producing 89 assists while representing Liverpool in the English top flight.

Mark Noble (28 penalty kicks scored)

Like Gerrard, when it came to Premier League clubs, Mark Noble was a one-club man, as he represented West Ham 414 times in the English top flight, captaining the Hammers for much of the latter stages of his Irons career.

Noble was never a prolific goalscorer, as he was more of a classic defensive midfielder. However, he scored 47 goals in the top flight for the club from the east end of London, 28 of which came from penalty kicks.

Sergio Aguero (27 penalty kicks scored)

The diminutive Argentinian forward is City’s all-time leading goalscorer in all competitions, having scored an impressive 260 goals, 184 of which came in the English top flight.

Only 27 of Aguero’s Premier League goals came from the penalty spot. The forward actually scored 48 goals from the penalty spot in all competitions but also missed 14 times from the spot.

Mohamed Salah (27 penalty kicks scored)

‘The Egyptian King’, as he’s known on the red side of Merseyside, has scored 162 Premier League goals for Liverpool and produced 74 assists, with 27 of his goals coming from penalty kicks.

However, throughout his career, Salah has scored 48 penalty kicks at club and international level. He has also missed ten penalties in his career, six misses being in the Premier League.

Strangely, two of the six missed penalty kicks were against the same opponent, Bournemouth, with the same goalkeeper, Neto, in between the sticks.

He also missed two penalty kicks in the same game for Egypt in a 6-0 2018 African Cup of Nations qualifying win over Niger.

Jamie Vardy (27 penalty kicks scored)

The Premier League-winning Leicester City forward has been prolific for nearly a decade in the Premier League, scoring 139 goals in 251 appearances in the English top flight.

Only 27 of his Premier League games have come from the penalty spot, having scored 33 goals from the spot in all competitions.

The former England international has also missed six penalty kicks in the Premier League.

The first top-flight penalty kick he missed was in May 2016, against Everton in a 3-1 win. On that day, Leicester celebrated winning the top-flight title for the first time in its history.

Matthew Le Tissier (25 penalty kicks scored)

Nicknamed ‘Le God’ at Southampton, he scored a quarter of his century of Premier League goals from the penalty spot. During his playing career, he was famous for his ability to score from penalty kicks.

In fact, Le Tissier, out of the 48 penalty kicks that the former England international took during his professional career he scored 47. The only exception came when Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Mark Crossley saved his effort in March 1993.

Thierry Henry (23 penalty kicks scored)

The fact that the French forward managed to score 175 Premier League goals with just 23 penalty kicks included in the tally is highly impressive.

Incredibly, Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer never missed a penalty kick in the Premier League. He was involved in a bizarre incident for the Gunners against Manchester City in 2005, though.

The incident is now famous, as it was when Henry attempted a clever pre-arranged trick with Robert Pires, but the move back-fired as the pair messed it up, and it eventually resulted in a free-kick to City.

However, he missed six spot kicks in the Champions League while playing for the north London club.
