Over the summer, we were treated to some fantastic football action – the inaugural new format of the Club World Cup, which featured 32 teams (many more than the old format) from around the world that had won respective continental tournaments over the last four years.

It was also viewed as somewhat of a litmus test for many, with the US (along with Canada and Mexico) also set to host the World Cup next summer.

With games played around the US, this was greeted with excitement as spectators in the stadiums and around the world were able to watch the different talent that was on show from teams who they wouldn’t usually get to see.

Premier League Well Represented

From the outset, there was a lot of speculation as to who would win the tournament – PSG, Real Madrid and previous winners, a new-look Manchester City being among the favourites, though in the end, there was a bit of an upset.

As such, it was Chelsea who were the surprise winners, humbling Champions League victors PSG in the final in a 3-0 victory.

Throughout the tournament, the Blues were well-drilled from the beginning – new signing Joao Pedro who arrived from Brighton being particularly impressive up front.

Indeed, Pedro scored in the final to add to his goal tally for the tournament, in which he finished with a total of three. His teammates, Cole Palmer (who struck twice against PSG) and winger Pedro Neto also both bagged three goals in the US. Enzo Fernandez finished the tournament with the most assists – three – highlighting his importance from midfield.

Meanwhile, City ended up crashing out unexpectedly to a well-organised Fluminense side, though up until that point had given a good account of themselves and looked like they might retain their title.

It would have come as no surprise to anyone that star striker, Erling Haaland was among the goals, also finishing with three, while teammate, Phil Foden also scored the same amount.

A number of clubs were also of interest to betting in the US, particularly the Pennsylvania sports betting market which has  – indeed, there are many fans of the Premier League across numerous states.

Club World Cup Providing Ideal Preparation For The Premier League Campaign

The fact that there was high quality club football on show in the summer, for many, signalled a great opportunity to decide how certain players may fare for the new season.

Also, with numerous players signed during the tournament and then linking up with their respective clubs, it was a good chance for managers to test these out. Certainly Pedro was a star performer, while City had numerous additions that they had made prior to the tournament. Dutch midfielder Tijani Reijnders, who signed from AC Milan has made a significant impact.
