ugly footballers

There is a reason why phrases like ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ have stood the test of time. Whether someone is attractive or unattractive is an objective thing, so someone that features on this list might well be a footballer that you personally think is really attractive.

If we’re being honest, there is also something quite offensive about judging a footballer by their looks and if this was a site looking at female players then there might well be uproar about it. It is therefore important to remember that it’s just a bit of fun and we’re not really making a comment about how anyone looks.

Ronaldinho

If you were to believe that you could either be a good footballer or you could be good-looking, Ronaldinho might well be the example that proves it. The Brazilian was one of the best players in the world when he was plying his trade, which is reflected in the fact that he won the Ballon d’Or.

Yet there is no arguing against the fact that he isn’t exactly one of the best-looking people around. That is largely down to the fact that he had a big mouth and extremely prominent teeth, which are such that they all but overtake his face. Rumour has it that he didn’t disagree, undergoing surgery to improve his look.

Joleon Lescott

To be clear about something, this is not a page that is designed to mock the footballers put on the list. That is evident when it comes to discussions around Joleon Lescott, whose characteristic looks were down to the fact that he was involved in a car accident when he was a five-year-old.

That incident left him with a scar on the front of his head, having also been in intensive care for months afterwards. Sadly for Lescott, the scar makes him look a little bit like a Klingon extra from a Star Trek movie, which is how it is that the former Everton and Manchester City man’s name is listed here.

Héctor Herrera

Given the fact that he won the Primeira Liga with Porto and La Liga with Atlético Madrid, Héctor Herrera probably won’t care a jot what anyone thinks about his looks. He made a successful career out of being a footballer and has the medals to prove it, but his somewhat disproportionate nature meant he was never one of the best-looking players.

It is all about the fact that he had big ears that stuck out, although that alone isn’t enough to put someone on this list; after all, if it were then Gary Lineker would’ve been top of it. Sadly for the player, though, his head was relatively small, making the ears stick out more, whilst his prominent jawline didn’t help.

Franck Ribéry

As with Joleon Lescott, the looks boasted by Franck Ribéry were as a result of something that happened to him when he was a youngster, so adding him to the list feels a little bit snide. He and his family were involved in a car accident when he was a two-year-old, causing him to have more than 100 stitches.

He ended up with two scars on the right side of his face, plus one across his brow. That left him scarred for life, causing the reason for his rather specific, Bond villain look. For many, however, that might be part of the attraction, giving him the ‘rough and tumble’ look that some people go for.

Sulley Muntari

Suleyman Ali “Sulley” Muntari was born in Ghana in 1984 and went on to play football for the likes of Inter Milan, AC Milan and Portsmouth. Sadly for him, the way his face is put together means that he has long been considered one of the least attractive-looking guys around, with all of his features being in the middle of it.

The player himself is unlikely to care what anyone else thinks of him, given the fact that he’s married to businesswoman Menaye Donkor and they have children together. He also has numerous winners’ medals to his name, including the FA Cup, Serie A and Coppa Italia.

Kenny Burns

If you want to know whether someone is considered to be good-looking or not, asking someone who knew them is one way. Brian Clough wasn’t a very nice man, so his thoughts about Kenny Burns might well be taken with a very large pinch of salt. Even so, he said the following about him:

“The ugliest player I ever signed was Kenny Burns. He had no teeth. I used to play centre-forward and to have beaten someone with the ball and then seen Kenny Burns looking at me, I’d have given him the ball.”

Burns is likely to have taken Clough’s thoughts in good spirit, if for no other reason than he went on to win back-to-back European Cups with Nottingham Forest under the management of Clough.

Luke Chadwick

If you want an example of how making fun of people over how they look is actually quite a serious issue, you can find it through Luke Chadwick. The midfielder began his career with Manchester United before moving to West Ham United in the wake of numerous different loan moves.

When he was a youngster, he had a severe overbite, but a fear of dentists meant that he couldn’t face getting it fixed. When combined with an issue around acne, he soon became something of a laughing stock, including on the TV show They Think It’s All Over, which caused him mental health issues.
